It always gives me pause at this point, faced with a road that just drops off and the Rio Grande River Gorge straight ahead. <br />This is the road from the west side of the gorge down to Pilar and the Taos River Road: steep, winding and a lot of signs that warn about falling rocks- you know the ones that show some helpless car threatened with a boulder dropping out of the sky. <br />I am headed to the Village of Pilar to join up with the High Desert Painters for a day of plein air painting. <br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4B_2tHLFrU2lM3rXhRJvBnc8uHPp26Ym7t7Y2JhpluZpxB0R8ZK3Doea4CUd1ecomhjARQ_BykrMmMHZE8UQtyGRcveSJuxdoN8-nA8GqjZMRplCPMogrzJnuE2FVNOI9yNyRiCrNr1Jy/s1600/Easels.jpg"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4B_2tHLFrU2lM3rXhRJvBnc8uHPp26Ym7t7Y2JhpluZpxB0R8ZK3Doea4CUd1ecomhjARQ_BykrMmMHZE8UQtyGRcveSJuxdoN8-nA8GqjZMRplCPMogrzJnuE2FVNOI9yNyRiCrNr1Jy/s200/Easels.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5607921369714965074" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwMjad6V72vaLrSybr2IrOmrN1F5mHb-X7FF5wFiMFG_odOPCHjm954X56PqpXRCtXSN67MZoJB_urdaAhtt84eWAF-5tPUShEd38nwhmfKHpUZzkZ9jTE4C4ook4n7jU_uexrJqZv4Jje/s1600/Judy%2526Janis.jpg"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwMjad6V72vaLrSybr2IrOmrN1F5mHb-X7FF5wFiMFG_odOPCHjm954X56PqpXRCtXSN67MZoJB_urdaAhtt84eWAF-5tPUShEd38nwhmfKHpUZzkZ9jTE4C4ook4n7jU_uexrJqZv4Jje/s200/Judy%2526Janis.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5607921288618015506" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />It is always somewhat miraculous that we even meet at all, there being no cell service in this part of the country but we look for cars, or painting umbrellas and amazingly we connect. It was a week of some harsh weather changes with high winds and rain - not ideal - but Friday was perfect. When we eventually found each other on the hillside above Pilar we enjoyed views in almost every direction. Judy Howells and Janis Loverin looked to the view over Pilar and Jana Van Wyk set her sights on the river. The piece on my unmanned easel on the right is of the view to the west and down the canyon.<br />Click on the photos to view them larger.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjd-kt10rU20NtcyWtY6AJV35iRtKIXv-L-PCQnCiDPQLOXePRgTaT4lwrv50T1DOp3n-6Jofd7TjJljDZckYbu0-RV83n5nWsCjpemulao51AIC-vOde7w9caWA9meGA5YRKbCReztEiv/s1600/Jana.jpg"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 152px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjd-kt10rU20NtcyWtY6AJV35iRtKIXv-L-PCQnCiDPQLOXePRgTaT4lwrv50T1DOp3n-6Jofd7TjJljDZckYbu0-RV83n5nWsCjpemulao51AIC-vOde7w9caWA9meGA5YRKbCReztEiv/s200/Jana.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5607921729496887026" /></a>Pleinviewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01838315918167221891noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2574938125793889013.post-34893356577622963092011-01-24T08:24:00.000-05:002011-01-24T08:25:15.349-05:00Painting in the Rio Grande Gorge<div style="MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; TEXT-ALIGN: center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDLoZsWGTcDUTwFH6v1RkBhVMmfqoxpXpwri1oCzP25M11OhBMWPJqkFJk5DtGxYOyWjHc77xjPqxGDP_ahRmw0zKgWsSHCbgUrnOrT2_PBxliNjHIcwFiEYkd9u-WTbPIjXv70A2OLig4/s1600/HDPgroup.jpg"><img alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDLoZsWGTcDUTwFH6v1RkBhVMmfqoxpXpwri1oCzP25M11OhBMWPJqkFJk5DtGxYOyWjHc77xjPqxGDP_ahRmw0zKgWsSHCbgUrnOrT2_PBxliNjHIcwFiEYkd9u-WTbPIjXv70A2OLig4/s320/HDPgroup.jpg" border="0" /></a> </div>In May 2010 the High Desert Painters met in Taos, New Mexico to paint on location for a week. The sunny weather turned a bit colder and the clouds rolled in as we painted. The colors and shadow patterns on the mountains were amazing, and we stayed out in the cold wind as our fingers turned numb. What a wonderful afternoon, followed by the outdoor fireplace on the patio and then dinner at Orlando's. The photo above is of Judy Howells and Janis Loverin, l. to r.<br /><div></div>High Desert Paintershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11090194053015450533noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2574938125793889013.post-14734994909115332492008-10-22T08:34:00.000-04:002008-10-22T09:03:38.560-04:00Painting in the High Desert in Autumn<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOhSGQMhHA3z6HOEr_3R8Mmwlq32_b5-Hl3jM-JZbsqhIxkWvrn8smm-HENJND8JKn8cj83qRLHkOpmwd9fAdrWo2NuCc8jWySkLitBRcVhUgSTbIR0PWiNHRT7Yin6k0Z2Mbm35Gs9WpM/s1600-h/101_0241.jpg"></a><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvb4Chf1PhwdmicD7YakQcV4vS2kRH0Bv1oslQHe4maCsS-WhYHcJpC-tzOe-ljbUdqAL0NUmt20jOxJp33t1UNAc9kRGjeXVm3mQQIJTKPgUCCpl32nE-TbAw0fPK2UGZFfjlRI7STjvv/s1600-h/100_9480.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259957617101881314" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvb4Chf1PhwdmicD7YakQcV4vS2kRH0Bv1oslQHe4maCsS-WhYHcJpC-tzOe-ljbUdqAL0NUmt20jOxJp33t1UNAc9kRGjeXVm3mQQIJTKPgUCCpl32nE-TbAw0fPK2UGZFfjlRI7STjvv/s320/100_9480.jpg" border="0" /></a> On a gorgeous October day, <a href="http://www.anntempleton.com/">Ann Templeton </a>worked her magic and allowed us to watch her create a painting of Abiquiu Lake from an overlook near the entrance road for Ghost Ranch New Mexico. Some of us choose the upright red rocks as our subject; others decide to let the casitas weave their story into the painting. This day dawned with the crisp October air at 40 degrees so by midday the warm sun on this mesa is a welcome participant in our painting experience.<br /><br /><br /><div></div></div></div>High Desert Paintershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11090194053015450533noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2574938125793889013.post-75859555975916671352008-10-18T13:37:00.000-04:002008-10-18T13:39:01.978-04:00October 2008 Taos Plein Air Paint Out<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_Ae2h6DdlF229W8zxc-yTRj4ItgpPzvXOwknGX6_3umXVNE6aZjKoqGdfutNcpXgeN9NdazbRFq_RY3UvFfqNKoePrB_byNV1skRjA-fWft-9LqGns5C2FrwYH9g_4Uf4ZjVPsgT_AbA/s1600-h/101_0329.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5258547363596452082" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_Ae2h6DdlF229W8zxc-yTRj4ItgpPzvXOwknGX6_3umXVNE6aZjKoqGdfutNcpXgeN9NdazbRFq_RY3UvFfqNKoePrB_byNV1skRjA-fWft-9LqGns5C2FrwYH9g_4Uf4ZjVPsgT_AbA/s320/101_0329.jpg" border="0" /></a>During mid-October 2008 four members of the High Desert Painters painted on location in Taos, New Mexico. Jana and I learned a lot. Camille Przewodek is such a fabuloous teacher, that we barely noticed the flies, chiggers, mosquitos, snakes, and 95 degree days and electric black-outs! I'd do it again in a heartbeat!Nitahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10065504979398950937noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2574938125793889013.post-89681663205681690392008-08-03T16:37:00.000-04:002008-08-04T17:06:42.317-04:00Two High Desert Painters near St. Michaels, Maryland<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIHjWsSH1YEqgjI3ATxpLRYc_64d0CkRzMBvciZGXHGa6k1na4QKGrjDWbV4pKkGLx7xvAj8V5OgiqIkPnYARFQgzI_65so-nYZO8ISuo-GWKHKx8rIX5XmqnBOceZJOiA778xiPi7KpBy/s1600-h/100_8332.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5230394316255257522" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIHjWsSH1YEqgjI3ATxpLRYc_64d0CkRzMBvciZGXHGa6k1na4QKGrjDWbV4pKkGLx7xvAj8V5OgiqIkPnYARFQgzI_65so-nYZO8ISuo-GWKHKx8rIX5XmqnBOceZJOiA778xiPi7KpBy/s320/100_8332.jpg" border="0" /></a> Two of the High Desert Painters -- <a href="http://www.nitaharper.com/">Nita Harper </a>and <a href="http://www.janavanwyk.com/">Jana Van Wyk </a>-- spent a week in July painting "en plein air" in Maryland and studying with <a href="http://www.przewodek.com/">Camille Przewodek</a>. The photo above is (l to r) of Jana, Camille and Nita. It was a wonderful week in a spectacular area of the country along the Chesapeake Bay shore. Camille is a wonderful teacher and a warm, caring person. And her husband Dale also helped with the workshop - they are both wonderful painters who studied with Henry Hensche. And Dale did a great job facilitating Camille's teaching, as we say now "everyone needs a Dale"!<br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmhFk5Z17-4DSpGHZ0a1yK-Mo02kbNe0_EszrZKTDvc5Cr3HJol4xXqvw6VCZo2N2HP3y_NqpEjiOwuFv2jiz_EmAEjkn9celep-QWfG3Dfc9j7Bk-z9-fOptG-2OZRT2OLFiFz0iyoY4o/s1600-h/100_8145.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5230394094192407554" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmhFk5Z17-4DSpGHZ0a1yK-Mo02kbNe0_EszrZKTDvc5Cr3HJol4xXqvw6VCZo2N2HP3y_NqpEjiOwuFv2jiz_EmAEjkn9celep-QWfG3Dfc9j7Bk-z9-fOptG-2OZRT2OLFiFz0iyoY4o/s320/100_8145.jpg" border="0" /></a> </div><div></div><div></div><div>The workshop was held at <a href="http://www.maplehall.com/">Maple Hall </a>B&B in Claiborne, MD, and most of us ended up painting the waterway along the shore, in addition to many other spectacular views on the property. The Hondo Valley in May is a magical place to be. Jana (left), Ann (middle), and Janis (right) spent a week painting at Ann's Ruidoso, New Mexico studio fueling the creative fires. You can see one of Ann's abstracted landscape paintings in the background of the photo above. <br /><br /><div></div>High Desert Paintershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11090194053015450533noreply@blogger.com0
